Hi Friends,
Long time no see, some of you. I'm writing to let you know that there are some nice videos of the Feb. 5th concert with the John Stetch Trio up on YouTube.com . Just type in john stetch nicholas walker tom killian for the search, and you'll see six videos come up.
Please enjoy, and share anything you like with people you know so we get a bunch of hits on youtube. :-)
Plutology begins as a free jazz exploration, but soon turns into a quirky up-temp rhythm changes romp which gradually moves more inside with bebop subs and a slap bass solo too!
Black Sea Suite is a Stetch original - a thru-composed tribute in 2 parts to music of that region with some thrilling solo sections. I'm featured in part 2 on the bow.
Buggs Bunny, Dallas and Star Trek are all Stetch arrangements from his new TV Trio CD that are a blast to play and listen to. Buggs is at a rippin tempo here, Dallas is a ballad that gets away from itself, and Star Trek is bound to become a new jazz standard.
We'll also be playing at Ithaca College today at 5 in IGER with Mike Titlebaum, and tomorrow, 6:00pm Feb. 26th on the radio http://www.jazz901.org/ and at 8:00 at the High School for the Arts in Rochester.

I'll be playing a really fun jazz concert in Rochester on Friday February 27th at the Rochester School of the Arts - 45 Prince St. (at University Ave.) We'll start at 8 PM. It has been so long since I've performed in Rochester, and I'm really excited about this show.
I'll be playing with pianist John Stetch, and drummer Tom Killian. John is a terrific pianist who's been featured on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz show on NPR a number of times. John's latest CD, TVTrio is nominated for a Canadian Grammy - Juno Award - for album of the year. The CD and our concert feature John's arrangements of many popular TV themes from the 70's, including, Star Trek, Dallas, The Waltons, Buggs Bunny, and Sanford and Son. I know you'll love it, so please come and support us, and spread the word to Rochester Jazz fans so we get a great turnout!

Thursday February 5 at 8:00 pm I’ll be playing at the Carriage House Café with The John Stetch Trio. Admission is $10, ($5 students and seniors). We'll be playing mostly TV theme arrangements to celebrate the release of John’s new CD TV TRIO, as well as some original compositions. Tom Killian is on drums, and this promises to be an outstanding evening of jazz.
ARTIST: JOHN STETCH ALBUM: TV TRIO LABEL: BRUX RECORDS RELEASE DATE: January 09
With the release of his new CD, TV Trio, pianist John Stetch delves into a more recent and somewhat unexpected chapter of the Great American Songbook – TV themes of the 70’s and 80’s. The John Stetch Trio presents swinging and fun arrangements of such classics as Star Trek, Six Million Dollar Man, The Waltons, Love Boat, Bugs Bunny, The Price is Right, Rocky and Bullwinkle, All My Children, Dallas, Sanford and Son and more.
“The TV themes that had the most meaning to me were the ones from my childhood in the 70’s and 80’s,” says Stetch. “That happens to be the best compositional period for TV – like a golden age…the tunes are no less swinging and no more corny than all those Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Gershwin tunes in their original, square ‘and quarter-notey’ sheet music form. But we can thank Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and many others for setting the example of transforming standards into great trio arrangements”
Rather than seeking tunes that already lend themselves to the jazz vernacular, Stetch sought out some unlikely suspects, hungry for the challenge of turning these musical souvenirs of his childhood into freshly updated gems.

I'd like to invite you to two very interesting concerts coming up this week and next:
The first features Argentinean bandoneonist Daniel Binelli, this Friday January 30th 2009, 8:15pm at Ithaca College in Ford Hall. As part of our faculty ensemble Tango de Cámara (with professors Pablo Cohen, Steve Mauk, and Wendy Mehne), I’ll be joining maestro Binelli on this Enduring Masters Series Concert.
In addition to a very rich career in traditional tango music, in 1989 Binelli joined Astor Piazzolla’s last sextet. After Piazzolla’s death, Binelli became his successor and the torch-bearer of Nuevo Tango around the world. Lately he has been featured with some of the most important orchestras in the US and Canada (Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Buffalo, Montreal, etc). Binelli will be spending a few days at IC giving master classes and leading rehearsals, culminating with this concert on the 30th.
The second is on Thursday February 5 at 8:00 pm I’ll be playing at the Carriage House Café with The John Stetch Trio. Admission is $10, ($5 students and seniors). We'll be playing mostly TV theme arrangements to celebrate the release of John’s new CD TV TRIO, as well as some original compositions. Tomorrow morning, Saturday, December 6th, I'll present a bass workshop at the NYSSMA conference. I begin at 8:30 am with a few movements of solo Bach, and Rabbath's La Guerre et La Paix, then we'll look at various tuning and fingering systems, the NYSSMA standard, approaches to sounding points with the bow using a Slava Pub bowing template, a discussion of sitting and standing and the inclined stool, and finish up with a performance of some new NYSMAA solo repertoire by Sam, Shuhan, a 15 year old bassist at Ithaca High School. Hope to see you there.
Tonight Kulmusik (see below) plays our final concert at the NYSSMA winter conference in Rochester, NY. If you're there, please do not miss it! 7:15 at the Haytt Regency.

I've just returned from an amazing trip to St. Petersburg with Kulmusik, the Ithaca College Contemporary Music Ensemble. our concert in Glinka Hall was magical, especially due to the phenominal acoustics, which I have never experienced before. (Even when the entire ensemble was warming up, I could follow the decay of a plucked open bass string to niente!) The Ligeti Kammerkonzert was a special treat!
While in St. Petersburg, I gave a short performance and enjoyed a masterclass at Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory of Music. I was honored by the invitation of Александр Алексеевич Шило, (Aleksandr Alekseevich Chilo), a celebrated Russian bassist and pedagogue, who is as warm and gracious as he is a monster at the bass! His class played with rare passion and with an ever-present rich, inspiring sound. I look forward to a return visit with these students in March.
